The ultimate final of this years wave tour will now be on the world known break of Ponta Preta on the island of Sal. This opens up for a new and exciting opening for the world championship title, and what a place to finish it off. Usually the Cabo Verde event is at the beginning of the season, but this year it has been pushed to november 15-23. Will Josh Angulo make a one time appearence? Here is what he had to say himself:
“We’re firing on all cylinders at the prospect of closing the 2010 season in Cabo Verde. Historically the biggest finals ever were in Hawaii and now Cabo Verde has jumped into the driver’s seat with the billing of ‘best windsurf spot in the world’. The mixture of wavesailing’s legends clashing their epoxy swords with the PWA warriors of today should make for one of the heaviest showdowns of all time. The early winter period of November brings with it fresh ‘alizes’ breezes as well as pulsing Atlantic swells which combine for a lethal cocktail of ‘Ponta Preta on the rocks’. I personally look forward to a one-off wave competition appearance and will have to buckle down to try and hold my top spot in the lineup, but most of all I look forward to once again welcoming the world, alongside CapeVerde Investimentos and Camara Do Sal, to the friendly islands of Cabo Verde.”

Should anyone have forgotten how Ponta Preta is like when it is firing, then check out this video of Josh ripping it at the previous years contests. See you on Cabo Verde

The PWA worldcup at Fuerteventura is already over and the tour continues on to Turkey where the next slalom worldcup will be starting on the 9th of august. Having been home for some days, our boy Kurosh Kiani gave us an update on what went down during the days of the slalom worldcup. Five days of full on racing action out on the beaches of Sotavento on the south of Fuerteventura brought us lots of good action to be followed live and by daily videos. Here is what Kurosh had to say together with a short video from the whole event:

Fuerteventura 2010 from Kurosh Kiani on Vimeo.

The Fuerteventura worldcup was by far the race that i had been looking the most forward to during this season. Finally getting to race at a place with lots of wind and perfect conditions. I was already on Fuerteventura 10 days before the racing would start and spent a big amount of time racing and tuning up with my danish mates who had also come with me.

I picked up Josh just one day before the event, and i could feel that he came all fired up and full of energy, whereas i maybe had burnt off some of mine during those 10 days that i was there before him. A lesson to bring with me for upcoming years.

Those five days that the race was on were quite hard, but i had some of the best fun ever. Why? Because personally i went through lots of changes during these days. I went from being totally nervous and not being able to pull if off to being confident and going for it during one day.

Josh was there to psyche me up and get me racing out there. Of course you cannot learn everything at once. It is a very long process, but being around on Fuerteventura this year gave me loads of new input to equipment, racing and my mental game. I mean, i have been here before and raced, but this time it was with other dimensions which gave me huge amounts of motivation go get out there for the next race and do better. Both Josh and Myself had great speed in out boards which were almost built perfectly for this place when you think of the sizes. We were on out small Magnum62 almost the whole time with sails from 5,5-7,8.

Josh was doing constant finals and loosers finals while i was not making the semi-finals, which is fine by now as i had different goals, which Josh and i agreed on before the contest. Again, i can not say how much fun it was racing with all your freinds around and just having pure fun. It was just like the old days when i started windsurfing, cruising around with your freinds out on the sea. I am saying this because it is very easy to forget the fun factor when you are in the middle of it. But this time it was all so clear and we are all excited to hit Turkey for the upcoming PWA slalom worldcup.

Now our roads have gone seperate ways and i am in Denmark re packing all my bags to take them back to the airport. Wind in Denmark is still on a summer vacation, but if i am lucky a day or two of sailing can happen before hitting Turkey where lighter winds normally dominate the venue.

The PWA slalom worldcup in Costa Brava ended up with nearly two eliminations finished being the event this year with the least time on the water. None the less, our guys were on the water getting a piece of the pie. Lots of waiting time and shifty weather made it impossible to run more rounds and the shift for our team has now switched over to the next worldcup which will be in windy Fuerteventura. Check out some of the shots that were caught by the lens of John Carter during the PWA event.

Here are some words from Kurosh Kiani: “The first worldcup of the year was very educational for me. I had the chance to see how my speed was, how my race game plan was working and how i was handling getting back into real life racing. I must say that i feel much more relaxed now compared to last year because i have spent the time preparing, and mistakes that i do get taken into consideration at once instead of getting into a mix of other facts that you need to think about. I know that i have good gear. I have spent lots of time on the boards and i know that i can handle it speedwise and when it comes to jibing. And now it comes down to being able to put all your energy into the racing and taking out your competitors. I know that Josh is super excited to get out there for the next worldcup in Costa Brava, and so am i. We came back with lots of new input which is going to help us get up there in the top. Now there is 3 weeks to go until the Costa Brava worldcup, and its time to get back on the water and get tuned in for the conditions that this place brings.”

Check out some of the pictures that came out of the action in Korea. We wish our guys good luck for the upcoming races.

The day at Ulsan, Korea startet rainy and cloudy but then turned into a sunny and windy spot in the late afternoon, and the sailors were sent out for another round of racing. It was both up and down for our guys at Jinha beach as Josh Angulo got disqualified in the quarter final. But Kurosh Kiani regained some of the glory by winning his first round heat in style. Here is some of the words Josh had to say about the day: “Today was one of those days where my first reaction when I went over early and was disqualified, was … I hate myself!. I know it’s very strong, but for some reason slalom sailing makes me that frustrated, because I’m very hungry for results. Fortunatley with age, I learn to cool quicker and already by the time I arrived to the beach I was still bummed but mellow. I had a talk with Robby Swift, who I know was feeling a bit down as well, so we got to bounce a few things back and forth. My high point is that I started learning quite a bit more about my new Gun Sails, which I just received. So I’ve had to learn about the tuning during the racing, which is definitely not ideal. I’m starting to get more comfortable and I am excited at the possibilities of their performance. Also, I have had a huge suport from Gun Sails, although I’m off to a shaky start, they understand the circumstances and have been very cool about the whole thing which reconfirms my confidence with the people I’m working with. Also, today I had a very proud moment when Kurosh won his first round heat in stylish form in front of second place Former World Champuon , Micah Buzianis. It was gret to see the big “A” in first place and the Magnum chomping down the competition. I’m looking forward to what I hope will be one last chance here in Korea and regardless of the challenges here.
Rain and bad weather has left the racers in Korea on standby for several days leaving lots of guys with no chance to do comebacks. As it is now the forecast is not looking too good but thermic winds have a tendency of picking up during the day in Jinha beach so we will hope for more wind later in the day for our boys and wish them the best of luck. We know they both have been working hard over winter, so giving them a couple of more races will make us stoked. All the down time in Korea has given Josh Angulo and Kurosh Kiani to give us another update from the daily life at Jinha beach. Check out this little clip they put together for us from the windless days at Ulsan, Korea.

Korea slalom worldcup is on, and 3 eliminations has already been run. Our boys Josh Angulo and Kurosh Kiani still need to get their racing game on, but they have been around the event site for the opening ceremony checking out what is going on around Jinha beach on a night like this. There is still 4 more days of racing left, so stay tuned here at anguloboards.com for more updates from our guys down in Korea. We wish them our best of luck for the coming days. As we have seen, there can be a difference of how the weather forecast looks and how the wind actually turns out, so we are staying tuned on www.pwaworldtour.com liveticker for live updates from the event.

New times are ahead for Josh Angulo, who has just signed with major brand Gun Sails as he did 15 years ago. Here are some of the words he had to say about coming back to a brand that he has been with it such long time ago:

Josh Angulo: “It’s good to be home with Gun Sails .When I previously joined the family 15 years ago, The Gun Sails Team and myself had a lot of good times together. Flash forward 15 years and I’ve rejoined what is now one of the strongest windsurf brands in the world. They run one of the coolest operations I’ve ever been exposed to.

Sail designer Renato Morlotti has a fanatical approach to perfection. This guarantees one of the strongest and most performance products available, which I require for my wave conquests and my goal to be a PWA slalom frontrunner. To be able to work with a team infrastructure whose main goal is great products and great customer service is such a sense of freedom. I am extremely thankful to be placed into such a great organization. From here out……. IT’S ON !”

The season is soon to start and we are proud to announce that we got Danish racer Kurosh Kiani on our team riding our Magnum slalom boards for the 2010 season.

Together with his current sponsor Simmer Sails Hawaii, Kiani can be proud to say that he is now sponsored by two of the most original brands within the windsurfing industry. Together with the likes of World Champion windsurfer Josh Angulo, Kiani will be carrying the spirit of Angulo Boards out in the upcoming 2010 season.

Kurosh, a young and energetic windsurfer who only started international racing two years ago says: “It all started with me having a conversation with Josh Angulo on which one of us could speak the most languages just a few months ago, and now I am working together with a super original brand with a big history. Imagine what we will accomplish in a years time”.

Windsurfing is now my life, and what better than to be associated with a brand that truly includes the surfing and windsurfing spirit from back in the days. I will be working with Angulo both regionally and internationally says Kiani who has his base out of Denmark in the summertime.

Angulo boards owner, brand manager, team captain and overall ripper Josh Angulo had this to say:

“Kiani’s a freak. He fits our brand perfectly. He’s got a story of all stories. Angulo is built and runs on relationships and Kiani is a classic dude that fits our team perfectly. He has a drive to excel that inspires me personally and I enjoy being around people who have stoke as their stoke rubs off on to us. Kiani is one of those people. My hope is that we will be able to groom Kiani and his multi-faceted bag of talents so he grows into a leading member of the Angulo company. Go get em Kiani ! ”

Age: 26

Lives in: Copenhagen, Denmark

Background: After living the first 8 years of his life in Iran, Kurosh moved to Denmark with his mom and dad and has lived there since. Not only does he excel in windsurfing but with a masters degree of business administration and computer science, he will be one of the highest educated on this coming years tour, and is always the man to ask for advice.

2009 was our first year re launching since the old days. I worked with renowned slalom designer Jean Bouldoires, in creating a 3 board line with a high range of use in order that riders of all sizes and skill could be competition ready. The main secrets of our success in 2009 were the constant release single/ double concave combined with an a rocker that perfetly compimented the “RTA” or reduced tail area of our Magnums. Rather than the traditional cut-outs only on the tail of the boards that most brands do, we came up with a revolutionary reduced tail which allows for a consistent water release and keeps the board steady in all wind conditions. We combined that with our exclusive RNA or ” reduced nose area” which allows the board to maintain a longer waterline which assists in glide through gusty winds and choppy waters, yet allowing no unneccesarry wind lift due to the reduced area. The RNA also proved a great advantage in eliminating chop disturbance in high power bouy rounding situations where the cut out on the nose would actually grip in and allow the board a very smooth rounding even in the roughest and trickiest conditions.

People around the world say that the Magnum boards were precise and spot on with the rocker. How did u manage that on the first run?

Jean has a wealth of experience and Angulo as a brand has been around for many years in the custom days. I grew up in the board building environment and together Jean and I have developed a shaper/tester relationship that allowed our combined years of experience to reflect the Angulo tradition of smooth riding boards.

What were your design objectives for the 2010 range?

Our objectives for 2010 were to fine tune the existing product and work hard to reduce the weights and the few points that need bettering. I am very pleased with the outcome as the boards have gained a huge jump in early planing , overall power and lift through the funky wind/water situations has increased, all the while maintaining the top end speed and control that we found so amazing in 2009. On top of that we were able to lose over a kilo on the bigger sizes, making the Magnums by far some of the most competitive boards available in the world today

Only 3 boards in the range, is that enough?

I guess that depends on who you ask. The only demographic that might want more sizing would be a professional, but due to the PWA 3 board limit, we worked to create 3 boards that have the largest range of top end performance on the market. Our RNA and RTA are huge reasons why our boards have sooooo much range.

No paint, what is that about?

I’m super excited about our exclusive and first of it’s kind “no paint finish”. This is a technique passed on and taught to me and Mark by my dad, Ed Angulo, which he learned, perfected and become a master of in the early 60’s and into the 70’s Only now in 2010, have we resurrected and re tuned the no paint finish. In impleminting the no paint finish we have eliminated any sand throughs thus creating an automatically stronger board and we have eliiminated final puddy coating, primer and painting which has significantly reduced weight. Lastly, but most importantly, we have eliminiated the CFC’s and chemical use that goes into the painting process which is the most enviromentally harmful process of board manufacturing, thus bringing Angulo to the forefront of working toward a cleaner tomorrow in the windsurf industry. So Stronger, Lighter Cleaner!

Nose cutaways and tail cutaways, is that still the way to go?

The RTA and RNA are proven designs that bring great performance advantage to our boards. There are obviously various ways to get from point A to point B, but we surely are pleased and for the time being will continue to dedicate efforts towards our RTA and RNA designs.

How would you describe the feeling of the new Magnums, sitting high/low in the water? Jibing? generel handling/control?

It’s always tricky to generalize , but I would say that the Magnums are generally a smooth ride with efficient power and ease of planing. The boards should equal or better most products and control is key in racing, so when I say smooth, I basically mean control. You need to be able to feel under control to keep a high speed around a course. But testing for yourself would always be the best bet.

What are your plans for 2010, are you doing the PWA world tour again?

Full Bore on the slalom World Tour!

For the release of our 2010 Magnum, we decided to drop some questions for Josh Angulo to get a better insight on the ideas for this years boards.
